When Is A Smart Watch Smart Enough?

It’s time time to move on from the Year of Mobile.  2013, apparently is the Year of the Smart Watch!  According to the Samsung VP of Mobile Technology, Samsung are definitely working on a Smartwatch to bring to market.  This comes hot on the heels of rumours that Apple are almost certainly working on a curved glass wearable wristwatch.  In addition Google has recently filed a patent for a touch screen wrist watch.   But big players Samsung, Apple & Google will not be first to market.

Over the last 12 months we’ve seen a handful of Android based devices such as the Wimm One and the I’m Watch, along with big brand offerings the Sony Smartwatch & Motorola’s MotoActv which is marketed as a fitness device.

The Pebble Watch

The Pebble Watch

The Pebble watch broke Kickstarter records last year by raising $10 million in backing (a little over their $100,000 target!).  Alhough a need to massively upscale is a good problem to have, there were certainly some teething problem.   Pebble have now begun shipping watches to the initial backers, and are about to launch their interface SDK.   You can sign up on the Pebble website to pre-order the commercial product which, like most of the supposed ‘smart ‘watches  is getting mixed reviews.

It has to be said, overwhelmingly reviews of the current offering have been lukewarm to say the least.  Some of the fitness based watches have met very specific needs and found approval in their niche market, but overall the Smartwatch category is still waiting for a really well designed, useful, game changing wearable device.

Perhaps, reflecting the mobile phone market, what we’re seeing now are the “Feature” Watches, with genuinely “Smart” watches still to come.  Will Samsung’s rumoured Galaxy Altius hit the mark, or are wearable Google glasses the answer?  This fun article from News.com.au weighs up the pros & cons.  Meanwhile, we’ll just have to wait & see.

One thing’s for sure though, the hipsters will still be wearing a Casio F-91W.
